In Italy, 1,300 people a year fall ill of legionella.
What strikes in the case of Bresso is the simultaneousness of infections and the proximity of homes. The disease is not transmitted from person to person, but by breathing droplets of infected water.
The six sick, then, were all in the same public premises with defective air conditioning facilities? Or have they inhaled infected water vapor, perhaps from the evaporation towers of large roof air conditioning systems? Or have they become infected with home water, because of problems with the aqueduct? For the moment, there are no answers. Thus the inhabitants were invited by the municipal administration not to shower, to take precautions in the use of the hot water of the taps at home and not to irrigate the gardens with spray pumps.
The Mayor of Bresso, Ugo Vecchiarelli, has published on the website of the Municipality an anti-legionella decalogue. «We do not want to underestimate what has happened and we want to continue in the work of prevention and information – he says –.Legionella can colonize water plants in parts where water stagnates for a long time and in the terminal points when maintenance is not adequate, for example in showerheads encrusted by limestone».
Oscar Di Marino, one of the leading Italian legionella experts, points out: «The ideal habitat of the bacterium is hot water, especially if the temperature is between 25 and 55 degrees.The legionella is transmitted through the particles of water nebulized by an air conditioning system, by the equipment of a dentist, even by certain ornamental fountains. All hospitals in Lombardy are well equipped to treat it».
